With pleasure and excitement, WordSpace kicks off our 2016 – 17 season with a reading and conversation with Willard Spiegelman, Willard has been the Hughes Professor of English at Southern Methodist University, and from 1984 – 2016 served as the editor of Southwest Review. Never known to be a man at a loss for words or opinions, his latest thoughts have been collected into his second book of essays, Senior Moments.
“If you are a living, breathing member of the human race, then Willard Spiegelman’s exemplary Senior Moments is for you. Aging is our universal condition: the only question is whether we approach our seniority kicking and screaming, or proceed with some degree of style and, let us hope, capacity for happiness. At The Wild Detectives, Willard will read from his new book and be joined in conversation by Greg Brownderville, professor of poetry at SMU and the man stepping into Willard’s position as editor of Southwest Review.

Lit Hop is a one night festival-style walkabout experience of literary events!
WordSpace, Dallas’s favorite non-profit literary organization, takes on a new meaning for its slogan “Get Lit” with the announcement of the biggest bookish gathering Dallas has seen in 2016. Lit Hop is a well-read bar crawl experience going down in — you guessed it — Deep Ellum on July 30, 2016. Guests attending this FREE event are encouraged to wander between bookshops, art galleries, and bars to enjoy an eclectic collection of literary atmospheres!

WordSpace is please to present an event in participation with this “festival of disputed ideals“. “Utopian Fantasies” is part of a larger landscape of Free Fall Festival 2016’s nine events featuring exhibitions, performances, and talks by El Centro students, selected city arts faculties and many Dallas community artists and writers. The events will span September 8 to December 17 and take place in galleries and bookstores in Oak Cliff, The Cedars and Fair Park’s Exposition neighborhoods.
The WordSpace presentation of “Utopian Fantasies” will feature spoken word by Lee Escobedo and Patrick Patterson-Carroll. Experimental film presentation by Colette Copeland. Hip-hop performance by Fidel NJ–just WordSpace’s cup of tea for a great Happening.

Wordspace presents Artspeak with the legendary post skills ensemble “Inferno Texino” featuring the reknown Andy Don Emmons, Clay Stinnett, Brad Wthrd, Jason Cohen and Mark Martinek. The Inferno Texino clan are known to subvert sounds and rhythm into a liberating miasma of sonic transendence, This is music that pushes beyond the avant garde in order to arrive at the raw and elemental. Can you dance to it? Damn straight! So get your ears inflamed and motivate your lower chakra with the Inferno Texino Experience! You will be blessed as your mind gets undressed!

In this exhibition, “B.A.’s Co-Creational Vortex” features new work by Brett Ardoin. This show opens Sat. Aug 6 with a reception for the artist from 6-9pm and will run till Sunday Sept. 11. Mighty Fine Arts is located at 409A N.Tyler in Historic North Oak Cliff 75208. “Brett” Ardoin was evoked in the primordial back waters of South Louisiana where the infernal humidity seeped into his brainpan and simmered into a seething excess of imagination. His seminal years were filled with the usual sordid episodes of wanton youth, casual sex and substances, filtered through a swampadelic haze of cultural misappropriation. Somehow he managed to transport himself across the state line to Dallas in order to align himself with more appreciative sensibilities. His “unique” presence found receptive acclaim and he unveiled his bold aesthetic agenda. He has declared himself a Co-Creative Performance Art Improvisational Magic Vibrationalist (Ladies Beware!} The fruits of his labor are finally revealed here in his inaugaral exhibit filled with furious gonzo energy and exuberance that isn’t afraid of sensory overload or “good taste” or disquieting conclusions. Step into the realm of the “B.A.” and get steeped in the vortex of the Co-Creational.

TYEHIMBA JESS: Before reading his impressive bio, we want you to also know that we’ve seen Tyehimba in action and highly recommend his appearance as an entertaining as well as educational experience.
Bio: Detroit native Tyehimba Jess’ first book of poetry, leadbelly, was a winner of the 2004 National Poetry Series. The Library Journal and Black Issues Book Review both named it one of the “Best Poetry Books of 2005.” Jess, a Cave Canem and NYU alumnus, received a 2004 Literature Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, and was a 2004-2005 Winter Fellow at the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center. Jess is also a veteran of the 2000 and 2001 Green Mill Poetry Slam Team, and won a 2000 – 2001 Illinois Arts Council Fellowship in Poetry, the 2001 Chicago Sun-Times Poetry Award, and a 2006 Whiting Fellowship. He exhibited his poetry at the 2011 TEDxNashville Conference. Olio, his second collection, is forthcoming from Wave Books in April 2016. Jess is an Associate Professor of English at College of Staten Island. Jess’ fiction and poetry have appeared in anthologies such as Angles of Ascent: A Norton Anthology of Contemporary African American Poetry, Beyond The Frontier: African American Poetry for the Twenty-First Century, Role Call: A Generational Anthology of Social and Political Black Literature and Art, Bum Rush the Page: A Def Poetry Jam, Power Lines: Ten Years of Poetry from Chicago’s Guild Complex, Slam: The Art of Performance Poetry. His poetry has appeared in journals such as American Poetry Review, Brilliant Corners, Ploughshares, Obsidian III: Literature in the African Diaspora, Warpland: A Journal of Black Literature and Ideas, Mosaic, American Poetry Review, Indiana Review, Nashville Review and 580 Split.
Sanderia Faye is an award winning writer, born and raised in Gould, Arkansas. She is the author of Mourner’s Bench (University of Arkansas Press, September 2015). Her work has appeared in various literary journals and in Arsnick: The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee in Arkansas, edited by historians Dr. Jennifer Wallach and Dr. John Kirk. Faye is co-founder and fellow at Kimbilio Center for Fiction. She moderated a 2015 AWP panel and the grassroots panel for the Arkansas Civil Rights Symposium during the Freedom Riders 50th Anniversary. She is a recipient of awards, residencies, and fellowships from Hurston/Wright Writers Conference, Eckerd College’s Writers in Paradise Conference, Callaloo Writers Workshop, Vermont, Writers Studio, The Writers’ Colony at Dairy Hollow, and Martha’s Vineyard Writers Residency. Faye is also a PhD student in English at North Texas University. She received an MFA in Creative Writing from Arizona State University, and a BS in Accounting from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff. She was an instructor for The United States Navy-Navy College Program for Afloat College Education (NCPACE).

The South Dallas Cultural Center is a community center with a wide variety of programs inspired by the vibrancy and diversity of the African Diaspora.
